Parks:

Colonial Park, Franklin Township. Offers two picnic areas available by reservation to groups of 50 people or more. Additional picnic tables and grills are located throughout the park. The Morgan Pellowski playground features innovative, barrier-free equipment.

A 1.4 mile fitness parcourse is laid out along a paved trail used by walkers, joggers, and bicyclists. Three ponds are stocked each year by the NJ State Division of Fish and Wildlife, offering prime fishing locations. A softball field is available by reservation to leagues, tournaments, and those wanting a pickup game. The Lois Howe Nature Trail leads visitors into areas rich in varied plant and animal life. In winter, supervised skating and cross-country skiing are offered when the weather permits.

Additional features include a putting course which is fully accessible to accomodate players with physical disabilities, paddle boats, a hand-powered boat for use by persons with limited mobility, eight all-weather tennis courts, and horticultural areas.


Duke Island Park, Bridgewater Township. Offers a wide variety of active and passive opportunities and special events for park visitors. Five picnic areas available for groups of 50 people or more. Each of these picnic groves has at least 12 tables and 8 grills. A larger picnic area features a pavilion and a softball field, and can accommodate groups up to 250 people. Additional picnic tables are available on a casual basis. A playground features innovative, barrier free equipment.

Two softball fields are available by permit for leagues and tournaments. When they are not reserved for this use, they are available to those who wish to practice or have a friendly pickup game. In the winter, supervised ice skating and general cross country skiing are offered when the weather permits. The adjacent Raritan River is stocked by the NJ Department of Fish and Wildlife and offers prime fishing locations for beginner and expert anglers. Hikers and walkers can take advantage of trails which follow the river and pass through extensive wooded areas.


Greenway Park, Milltown Road, Bridgewater. Offers a lighted inline skating rink, a basketball court, and an open play field. Access to fishing locations on the North Branch of the Raritan River is provided.


Little Brook Sanctuary, Bernardsville Township. A unique 100-acre sanctuary with a meandering brook that runs through the habitats of various wildlife including birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles. It remains undeveloped in order to further its role in acquiring, utilizing, and conserving lands that have unique or special value because of their natural beauty and ecological features. There is a small parking area adjacent to the rustic entrance.


Lord Stirling Park, Bernards Township. The park has been designated solely for environmental and equestrian activities. Lord Stirling Stables conducts a full program of equestrian instruction in English horsemanship for youth and adults from beginner through jumper. Several clinics are held annually, as well as special events and horse shows. 14 miles of scenic trails are available, as well as an indoor arena and outdoor rings. The facilities and horses can be rented by the hour.

The Environmental Education Center offers 8.5 miles of trails, including 2.5 miles of boardwalk that allows access to wetter portions of the park. Naturalists are happy to answer questions and also offer public tours. An 18,000 square foot building includes classrooms, an auditorium, a nature art gallery, library, and an orientation exhibition with a series of displays. An extensive range of programs is conducted to educate the public on environmental issues, natural history, archaeology, and outdoor recreation. Trails are open every day of the year from dawn to dusk.


North Branch Park, Bridgewater Township. The park is used extensively for major exhibits, shows, and fairs, as well as the host location of the annual Somerset County 4-H Fair. North Branch Park offers to picnic areas that are available to groups of 50 people or more. A pavilion may be reserved for group use and a number of picnic tables are available on a casual basis.

The North Branch of the Raritan River offers prime fishing locations and is stocked each year by the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife. Two softball fields are available for rental for leagues, tournaments, or pickup games. The park also has a soccer field, and a flying field for model aircraft enthusiasts. Model rocket hobbyists may launch their crafts on a section of the park that is dedicated to this use. Two horse show rings are used for fairs, shows, and training. Areas of the park are also available for rental for bicycle road races.


Sourland Mountain Preserve, Hillsborough and Montgomery Townships. The largest facility in the Somerset County Park System. Provides passive recreational opportunities in an undisturbed natural setting. Moderate and easy trails are available. The Preserve is open dawn to dusk.


Washington Valley Park, Bridgewater Township. The park contains the former Bound Brook Elizabethtown Reservoir which will become the focal point of the park along a network of trails.
