2002-2003 Gold Award Recipients



The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. Girl Scouts earning this award express a special commitment to themselves, the community, the world and the future.

The path to the Gold Award includes earning four Interest Project Patches, the Career Exploration Pin, the Senior Girl Scout Leadership Award, the Senior Girl Scout Challenge and the Girl Scout Gold Award project. The project requires girls to use their skills and leadership to design, develop and carry out a project that will benefit others. The combination of the girls' talents and energies with their values and convictions makes a positive difference in the lives of others.


The girls and their projects:

SU 1
Renee D - High Bridge Summer Recreational Camp Organized a one-week session of the township camp from July 8-12, 2002. Got approval from town council, organized registrations, supervised councilors, planned activities and booked entertainment for the week.

Shauna M - High Bridge Summer Recreational Camp Organized a one-week session of the township camp from July 22-26 2002. Children participate in arts and crafts, sports sessions, daily special activities, including guest presenters. The children were provided with a safe environment to make new friends and learn new things.

Michelle S - High Bridge Summer Recreational Camp Organized a one-week session of the township camp from July 15-19 2002. Assumed the roll of director for the session, supervised over 20 councilors, and exposed the participants to science, nature and sports through the program.

SU 2
Ashley C - Restoration of the Little Red School House. Completed the restoration of a historic landmark, the Little Red School House in Franklin Township. Covered walls with canvas, painted a woodstove, set up desks and benches, scraped old paint and repainted outside and planted flowers and set up a reading grove.

Elise P - Improving a Trail Worked on a trail at Unity Spiritual Center. Defined and mapped it, made benches, researched the wildlife to make an informational pamphlet, and then cleaned the area.

Lauren S - ABC Quilts Solicited fabric from neighbors, leaders, stores, organized a Sew-A-Thon on Good Friday at the Church of the Holy Spirit. 50 quilts were donated to this project and given to hospitals used for babies born sick, have HIV, or addicted to drugs.

Priyanka T - Little Somethings for our Soldiers Organized a drive for the American Red Cross to collect goods and hand made bags in support of our soldiers serving overseas.

SU 4
Agatha B - Space Awareness Addressed the lack of knowledge about the space program and how girls can be encouraged to participate in the future. Organized a Brownie Space Day program and created aerospace program boxes for Brownies and Juniors.

Marcella Marie N - Music Benches Designed and constructed new benches for the music area at Camp Dewitt.

Nicole S - Engineering Workshop for Juniors Created a curriculum to introduce the field of engineering to Junior Girl Scouts. Organized an engineering workshop on the council wide level that included a service project for the participants. Participants used their new knowledge to make gingerbread houses that were donated to Hunterdon Medical Center. A program box was also created for troops to use.

Melissa S - St. Paul's Christian Nursery and Elementary School Library. Organized and constructed the library and computer center for the new school. Labeled books and book cards.

SU 5
Cody C - ACT: Alexandria Children's Theater Created a drama program at Alexandria Middle School. Taught theater basics, held rehearsals and produced a play with the participants. Assumed the role of costume and make-up director.

Katherine Amy I - ACT: Alexandria Children's Theater Created a drama program at Alexandria Middle School. Taught theater basics, held rehearsals and produced a play with the participants. Undertook the role of director.

Kimberly K - ACT: Alexandria Children's Theater Created a drama program at Alexandria Middle School. Taught theater basics, held rehearsals and produced a play with the participants. As stage manager, was responsible for set design, lighting and sound.

Cynthia M - Color Guard Workshop Taught younger girls about the different techniques used in color guard and encouraged them to become involved in the marching band when they get older. Secured supplies and made flags for the participants to use.

Patricia S - Blankets for Tots Knitted blankets for Guatemala. After knitting the blankets, mailed them to Guatemala for young boys and girls to stay warm.

Katie B - Giving Our Past a Future in Readington Township Met the need to organize local historical data for Readington Township. Complied slide inventory of architecturally significant structures. Organized and indexed information from 19 cemeteries by cemetery name, gravestones plotted and inscriptions. Assisted in the compilation of a manuscript recording the history of slavery in Readington.

Tess C - Branchburg Town Portfolio Created a portfolio of places of interest in Branchburg for the New Jersey Motion Picture and Television Commission. Photographed points of interest, developed a power point presentation and presented findings to the Branchburg Communications Committee. Now filmmakers will have a resource for sites in Branchburg.

Erika H - St. Paul's Christian Nursery and Elementary School Library Organized and constructed the library and computer center for the new school. Oversaw technology aspects of library construction. Researched, recommended and installed software. Assisted in entering data and labeling materials.

Kristin L - St. Paul's Christian Nursery and Elementary School Library Organized and constructed the library and computer center for the new school. Oversaw physical aspects of the project. Designed layout, obtained and set up shelves, painted room.

Amanda S - St. Paul's Christian Nursery and Elementary School Library Organized and constructed the library and computer center for the new school. Researched each book in the county library system and entered data into school system, lead a training session for staff.

Jacqueline T - St. Paul's Christian Nursery and Elementary School Library Organized and constructed the library and computer center for the new school. Undertook organization of the video collection and assisted in book research and labeling.

SU 8
Kate B - Ridge Forensics Camp Organized a week long summer camp to teach incoming high school freshman about forensics. Topics included public speaking skills, extemporaneous speaking and debate. Over 50 students attended and many joined the forensics team as the school year started.

Melissa B - A New Dawn for Daisies Organized and ran a Daisy Troop. Planned meeting content and service projects. Daisies earned petals, completed service projects and attended camporee.

Christine D - Spring Sock Hop Organized a sock hop that collected socks for the Paige Whitney Babies Center and Sacred Heart Community Outreach Program. Served as liaison with PWBC, publicized event, and ran activities during event.

Geralyn D - Library Cart for Assisted Living and skilled Nursing Units Created a mobile book cart for the residents of Fellowship Village. Secured donations of books, cassettes, CDs, CD and cassette players and video tapes. Developed a catalog, rotation system and check out system for the materials. Now residents who are not able to get to the library can enjoy books, music and videos.

Beth H - Decorative Painting of the Climbing Walls Improved the atmosphere of the wall and increased the amount of students desiring to take part in Project Adventure 2, which is used to encourage teamwork between all students.

Elizabeth J - Homeless Solutions Dinner Organized a meal for the Homeless Solutions that feed over 50 guests. Chose recipes, shopped for ingredients, cooked entire meal, baked scratch cookies and pies and supervised volunteers during the dinner.

Soumya K - Ridge Forensics Camp Organized a weeklong summer camp to teach incoming high school freshman about forensics. Topics included public speaking skills, extemporaneous speaking and debate. Over 50 students attended and many joined the forensics team as the school year started

Amanda M - Spring Sock Hop Organized a sock hop that collected socks for the Paige Whitney Babies Center and Sacred Heart Community Outreach Program. Served as liaison with SHCOP. Secured DJ, organized decorations and ran activities.

Brittany M - Courtyard Garden Project Landscaped her school's courtyard. Removed weeds, prepared site, planted donated and homegrown trees and flowers, mulched the area. Instituted a student club, The Courtyard Project, to maintain the gardens.

Amy V - Baby Furniture Collected old furniture, painted the furniture with a theme in mind, and donated the finished furniture to the Harvest of Hope, non-profit agency for abandoned babies.

SU 9
Jessica Lynn A - Sexual Harrassment and Dating Violence Awareness in Middle School and High School Organized a program and acquired a speaker from the Women's Health and Counseling Sexual Assault Services to talk to the 8th and 9th graders in Middlesex.

Carly D - Funersize Organized a GirlSports Recruitment event. Held several sports readiness sessions for 16 girls new to Girl Scouting.

Natalie J - Amnesty Activist Social/Meetup Secured a park permit, food, speakers, and music to create a meeting for student activists. The purpose was to build a stronger network for activists, to meet and talk with others of similar interest in world affairs.

Amanda S - Park Bench Building and Installation Addressed the need to build and install benches in parks around Middlesex, NJ.

SU 13
Tara B - Everyone Belongs: Great Britain Developed a Bristish curriculum for the Everyone Belongs patch program that included crafts, games, history and culture of Great Britain. Organized and ran a workshop for kindergarten through second graders at Whiton School and created a program box for troops to use.

Jenna D - Hopping for Help Sewed 50 stuffed animal frogs for the first aid squad to give to children in need of comfort during medical calls.

Andrea G - Everyone Belongs: France Developed a French curriculum for the Everyone Belongs patch program. Topics and activities included crafts, culture, history, food and language of France. Organized and ran a workshop for kindergarten through second graders at Whiton School and created a program box for troops to use.

Melissa S - Toiletry Bags Sewed 60 toiletry bags and solicited donations. Toiletry bags and items were donated to local women's shelters. Organized an event for the Girl Scouts Beyond Bars program. Participants made homemade beauty products, got makeovers and learned about self-esteem.

Elisa V - A Night Out, In Planned several meals for the residents of Agape House. Solicited donations of food, organized several Brownie troops to assist in cooking, taught Brownies a cooking skills program and prepared the meals.

SU 14
Karen C - Under the Sea After School Program Addressed the issue of unattended children waiting for their parents after school at the municipal library. Implemented an after school program for the children, planned activities and supervised children in the creation of a mural with an undersea theme.

Chrissie H - Book Drive Organized a book drive for veterans and underprivileged children. Books were distributed to the veteran's home in Camden, Zambia and a Navajo reservation in Arizona.

Amelia V - School Kits Collected supplies, arranged them into hand sewn bags, and donated them to underprivileged children in Camden, NJ and sent some overseas.

Whitney W - Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Library Re-established church library, that had been unavailable to parishioners for several years, due to renovations. Created a book database and entered data. Prepared books for checkout with spine labels, checkout cards and protective book covers. Also labeled shelves and shelved books in the new library

SU 15
Karin C - Children's Literacy Program for English as a Second Language Program Created a books on tape program for children at Adamsville Elementary School. Often, students in ESL programs have parents who do not speak English and cannot read English books to them. This will provide a means for the students to read with their parents while learning a new language.

Dena C - Beginning Freshman Year Without Any Fears Addressed the anxiety experienced by eight graders and freshman just beginning high school. Surveyed current freshman, compiled data into statistics and graphs and created a web site about high school life. Site is linked to the Bridgewater Raritan Middle School webpage for easy student access.

Kristin H - Christ Church Youth Group Leader and Coordinator Planned activities, developed a calendar of meetings and events, obtained approval from church leadership, recruited adult volunteers and secured supplies for each meeting.

Elizabeth M - Learning Adventure Camp Organized a two-week learning camp for children of lower income or English as a Second Language families, to retain and improve math and English skills learned during the school year.

Amy M - Pajamas for Children of Tecate, Mexico Inspired by a service trip to Tecate, Mexico decided to sew flannel pajamas for the children of the area. Solicited donations of fabric and supplies, sewed 15 pairs of pajamas and shipped them to Mexico.

Geena R - Fishes and Fun Planned a program for third grade Brownies and Juniors to earn the Wildlife Badge. The program included a trip to Point Pleasant, a visit to Jenk's Aquarium, behind the scenes tour and bus transportation. Each participant donated an item to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine.

SU 16
Erica G - Equine Rescue Group Drive Addressed the needs of two horse rescue organizations that provide a peaceful place for unwanted horses. Organized supply drives for Milestone Ranch and Last Chance Ranch.

Amanda K - Blood Drive Addressed the local blood shortage. Contacted NJ Blood services and organized a blood drive that was part of her communities' Memorial Day activities.

Amy M - Baby Blankets Created a baby blanket and recruited volunteers to make blankets for Life Choices Inc. A total of thirteen handmade blankets were gift wrapped and delivered to the LC program for expectant mothers and mothers with small children.

SU 17
Julie C - SRAS Drive Organized three drives for the Somerset Regional Animal Shelter. Collected food, bedding and toys. Also donated time to the shelter by assisting staff, cleaning the facilities, feeding and walking the animals.

Megan D - Field Hockey Fundamentals Organized and presented a field hockey clinic for fifth grade girls in Hillsborough Township. Assumed the role of activities coordinator by developing drills, recruited volunteers from the high school team to run stations, officials to run mock game, and medical staff to be on site. Obtained equipment and developed site map.

Kaitlin F - Cleaning and Landscaping Flower Beds for Neshanic Reformed Church Improved the Neshanic Reformed Church's property for its 250th anniversary. Weeded, trimmed and mulched six large flower beds on the property. Also weeded stone parking lot. Now parishioners can enjoy revitalized grounds during their upcoming celebration.

Nikali J - Project Agape House Addressed the need for women residing at the Agape House to have the tools for successful job interviews. Organized a business clothing and make up drive. Over 500 articles of clothing were collected and donated to Agape House and other local shelters. Researched and designed a pamphlet to enhance interview skills.

Katie M - Field Hockey Fundamentals Organized and presented a field hockey clinic for fifth grade girls in Hillsborough Township. Assumed the role of event organizer by securing site for the event, preparing and distributing all paperwork, flyers, participant forms, confirmations and organizing registration. Served as liaison between event planners and the township and school system.

Seema R - Teddy's for Tots Sewed 20 hand made teddy bears to be used as welcome gifts for children new to the Agape House.

Allison S - Voices Against Hunger Addressed the need for hunger relief in our local community. Two-part project consisted of organizing a food drive and a letter writing campaign to encourage the Senators and Congressmen to support hunger relief legislations.

Stephanie S - Project Agape Planned weekly meetings of a Girl Scout troop consisting of the residents of the Agape House. Provided an after school activity and a sense of belonging to the residents.

Kristina W - Black Top Fun Painted the black top that students use during recess at her local school. Secured donations of paint and supplies. Planned layout of site and painted hopscotch and foursquare courts and a kickball field.

SU 18
Sara C - Prom Dress Drive Addressed the increasing cost of the prom in areas of need. Collected gently used prom dresses for the students of Trenton Central High School for the May 17, 2003 prom. Over 100 dresses were collected.

Amanda H - Softball Clinic for Girls Grade 1-4 Taught girls how to throw, field, hit, pitch and catch a ball and the importance of Title IX. Secured Jen Butler from the Women's Sports Foundation to speak about the positives of the sport.

Kalia M - Medical Supplies for Greyhound Rescue Organized a drive of medical supplies for organizations that rescue old and abused greyhounds.

Tori N - Book Bundles and Play Pals Addressed the importance of literacy by organizing a book drive for the patients of the Children's Specialized Hospital in Mountainside. Collected over 1,100 books and games from the community and publishing companies, including 295 books from American Girl and Random House. Also divided up materials by age, gender and interest and personally delivered items to the children.

Jaclyn P - Clothes for Africa Inspired by the care of her grandmother's home health aid, wanted to help her community and family in Africa as a thank you. Organized a clothing drive, sorted donations and shipped them to Africa

Kelly Z - September 11 Remembrance Ceremony Organized a September 11 Remembrance Ceremony for her community. Chaired planning committee, organized guest and religious speakers, singers and a slide show presentation.
