Girl Scouting Beyond Bars Families Incarcerated Mothers The majority of mothers in GSBB were the primary caretakers of their children prior to their incarceration. Most of the women incarcerated at Edna Mahan who are involved in GSBB are there due to drug or assault charges. The focus of all our meetings at Edna Mahan is on the girls and Girl Scout meetings. We are there to help facilitate the bonding between mother and child. In order to participate, inmate mothers are required to attend a weekly parenting meeting. They have the freedom and opportunity to discuss their present and past lives and receive help if so desired. Guardians Most of the girls in GSBB reside with a grandmother during their mother's incarceration. A few live with aunts; a few with fathers. Most of the girls live in fatherless homes. The guardians, most of whom are grandmothers, have raised their own families and now are raising grandchildren and serving as their primary caretakers. The GSBB program could not exist without the support of the guardians. Before every meeting and event, GSBB staff directly contacts each guardian to discuss details of the upcoming event and arrange for transportation and any needed permission slips. Each guardian is also mailed a calendar each month, listing all the planned GSBB events. |
