Girl Scouting Beyond Bars Mission and Goals

Why We Started GSBB

The mission or purpose of Girl Scouting is to inspire girls with the highest ideals of character, conduct, patriotism and service that they may become happy and resourceful citizens. Girl Scouting seeks to accomplish this by providing girls opportunities to develop their potential and have fun with their peers in a supportive, all-girl setting.

In addition to the Girl Scout mission, GSBB further addresses the special needs of girls whose mothers are incarcerated. Children are the innocent victims of their parent's crime and incarceration. Studies demonstrate a correlation between the incarceration of a parent and an increased probability the child may develop any one or more of the following behaviors:
  • Anxiety, depression and aggression
  • Learning disorders; a decline in school performance; truancy
  • High incidence of early pregnancy
  • Symptoms of post-traumatic stress
About 75% of incarcerated women are mothers with at least two children. Prior to their confinement, most were the primary caregivers for their children and a majority will resume their parenting role after release.

GSBB Goals
  • To help reduce a child's trauma of separation due to her mother's incarceration
  • To re-establish and strengthen the mother/daughter bond during separation through an enhanced visitation program
  • To expose at-risk girls to Girl Scouts programming to build character, self-confidence and self-esteem
  • To provide daughters of incarcerated women with opportunities for personal growth in a safe and supportive environment
