Commit to a Girl . . . Become a Mentor for Girl Scouting Beyond Bars What is Mentoring? Mentoring is a structured and trusting relationship that brings young people together with caring individuals who offer guidance, support and encouragement aimed at helping children reach their full potential. Young women and children participating in Girl Scouting Beyond Bars (GSBB) represent an underserved, at-risk segment of youth population. Their mothers are incarcerated, and these girls often face unstable home environments and other negative influences. At-risk girls are forced to grow up quickly when confronted with substance abuse issues, crumbling families, teen pregnancy, poor academic performance, peer pressure, gangs and violence. Without their mothers or other good role models to anchor them throughout childhood and adolescence, girls often feel unmoored and set adrift. Girls who are the innocent victims of their mothers' crimes and incarceration have suffered enough in their young lives. They deserve a fair chance to develop the confidence, character and support needed to lead a safe, healthy and productive life. They deserve hope… Mentors give girls not only hope, but the tools they need to make the empowering decisions that pave the way to a brighter future. How does mentoring work? |
