    Girl Scout Leadership Journeys

What is a Journey?

Journeys unfold through a sequence of activities and discussions that add up to one giant adventure. No matter how much time girls spend on a journey, the whole is always greater than any single part. When a Girl Scout journey comes to a close, girls and their adult guides truly feel a sense of accomplishment - and come to cherish the awards they've earned along the way.

Journey Trainings

Hour-long Journey Trainings for Brownie, Junior, Cadette and Senior levels are being offered this fall at North Branch. During these trainings you will become familiar with your level specific Journey and how to present it to your Girl Scouts. The Journey trainings are for leaders who have already taken the level training before August of 2008, but want to know about the new books and how they could add to our badge books.

Check the GSHNJ Calendar for training dates. Type in "Journey" in the calendar's search utility to find the offerings quickly.

What's in the Girl's Book?

The girl's book is a unique journey companion that is rich in Girl Scout history, traditions, and values. It offers opportunities to imagine and create through:

What's in the Adult Books?

The companion "how-to" guide for adult volunteers offers key information about the journey, its awards and its leadership benefits, with step-by-step sample plans for how journey sessions can unfold as girls meet. Adults in partnership with girls can expand or condense these plans, as they like.

The adult guides also feature sections on Girl Scout history and traditions, as well as tips on safety and understanding girls at each particular grade level. And, they contain information on what to do if a girl misses a session or an award step.

Introducing The First Series Of Journeys:

Transition to Journeys

You will still be able to use your current badge books and girls can pursue the Bronze, Silver and Gold awards. The Gold Award can be earned during the Senior and/or Ambassador levels.

Age Levels

Regarding the new age breakdown of levels: as always, we allow a leader to decide when they will bridge. We allow one year earlier or one year later. While the levels below are suggestions, they are not mandatory. Use your judgment based on the way grade levels are split in your school system.

Daisy troops who are bridging now will be Brownies for three years. That's okay. All troops are grandfathered in to complete their level in which they were trained. After 10/1/08, we will be following the new training of Journeys and outcomes for new troops forming. Also, the new troops forming will follow the level breakdown below.

Reminder: The Brownie Quest (new leadership resource for Brownies) is geared for 2nd and 3rd graders.

The new suggested levels that will be in effect in September/October are:

Daisies Grades K-1
Brownie Grades 2-3
Junior Grades 4-5
Cadette Grades 6-8
Senior Grades 9-10
Ambassador Grades 11-12
