Program Information for Parents

Uniform
The Girl Scout uniform is optional; a girl does not need to have a uniform to be a member of the Girl Scouts of the USA. Uniforms are available for purchase at the Council Shop. Your daughter's handbook explains the uniform and where to place the insignia. (Or see the diagrams on Girl Scouts of the USA's Girl Scout Central site.)

Membership Dues
The annual national membership fee for all Girl Scout members is $10 and is paid to Girl Scouts of the USA. The fee provides program and publication development, council support services and accident insurance coverage for all members when they participate in Girl Scout activities.

Financial Assistance
Girl Scouting is open to all girls and adults regardless of ability to pay. Rolling Hills provides a variety of financial assistance programs to help all members of limited financial means to participate in Girl Scout activities. All applications are confidential. Contact the Council Service Center for information about the Scholarship/Campership Fund and Wider Opportunity Grants.

Family Support Campaign
All Girl Scout families have the opportunity to support the Girl Scout program through the annual Family Support Campaign. Family Support is conducted at your troop's parents meeting by an adult volunteer of the troop. Family Support contributions are voluntary. These confidential gifts help provide the many services and activities offered by the council to support leaders and benefit girls and 25% of every donation is rebated to your daughter's troop.

Product Sales
Brownie, Junior, Cadette, and Senior Girl Scouts have the opportunity to earn money for their activities by participating in council sponsored product sales. Money earned by girls through product sales can offset all, or a large part, of the cost of Girl Scout activities. Girls are not permitted to sell any products other than Council approved products which include Girl Scout cookies, nuts, and the QSP program (magazines, etc.). Daisy Girl Scouts cannot participate in any money earning activities.

Product sales support the troop activities and they help to support the overall operation of the Girl Scout council. The Council Service Center, our camp, equipment, adult training, program activities and administrative support to volunteers are all important parts of the Girl Scout program and are funded in part by product sales.

What is your role as parent/guardian?
Your involvement and encouragement will help shape your daughter's experience in Girl Scouting. She will see your commitment to her growth, and before you know it, you'll be growing too! You will get to know your daughter's friends and be able to spend quality time with her while enjoying wholesome activities. Here are some suggestions for becoming an involved parent:
  • Attend parent meetings and other events to which parents and families are invited.
  • Support and reinforce health and safety rules. Ensure that your daughter arrives and is picked up on time for troop meetings. Complete all permission and medical forms. Sign the registration form and pay the $10.00 national membership dues. No girl is denied membership because of an inability to pay.
  • Provide troop dues and additional funds for special events and activities. If you cannot afford a fee, ask the troop leader to help you apply for financial aid. Consider a voluntary, tax deductible gift to the Council's Family Support Campaign, where 25% of your donation is rebated to your daughter's troop.
  • Take responsibility for your child's health and well-being. Plan to go along on trips when your daughter requires special attention.
  • Support your daughter's leader/co-leaders and offer to help. You can shop for supplies, make phone calls, plan an activity, or share a skill or talent. Be sure to appreciate and recognize the efforts and time of these dedicated volunteers.
  • Basic Troop Guidelines
    • Dues for troop/group activities are set by the group and must be paid regularly. In case of absence, girls must still pay their dues. Daisy Girl Scouts do not pay dues, but do pay an activity fee.
    • Girls must receive permission from the troop/group leader before leaving the meeting room and must always be accompanied by another girl. (Buddy System)
    • Permission slips must be returned by the due date.
    • Girls must be picked up promptly at dismissal time.
