Fires & Stoves at Camp DeWitt Fires Downed wood may be gathered at DeWitt. Do not cut trees. Saws are available. Cabin and Program Center campers are expected to leave a supply of wood for the next group. Fireplaces & Wood Stoves Please provide your own wood. No cooking in Program Center fireplace. Keep fires moderate in size. Two full buckets of water must be kept beside all fires. Do not pour water directly on metal stoves or hot concrete fireplace areas. Shovel dead cinders from fireplace into cinder buckets. Leave ashes in the wood stove located in DeWitt Cabin. Open Fires in Fire Rings Please provide your own wood. A fire permit is mandatory and may be obtained from the Ranger at check-in. Keep your campfire at a reasonable size to conserve wood. Cooking Fires Cooking fires must be in fire rings, in a portable cook stove. Acceptable fuels include butane, propane, kerosene, ethyl alcohol, charcoal and sterno (not supplied). The manufacturer's instructions for ignition and burning must be followed carefully. Girls must be closely supervised when using any stove. (See Safety-Wise--"portable stoves") Two full buckets of water must be kept beside all fires. Rake dead cinders to one side of ring. Pile extra wood on opposite side of cinders inside ring. |
