Teresa Martin President, Hunterdon County Housing Corporation Teresa Martin's advice to young women is to "Be all that you can be." Terry certainly leads by example in all that she does. Terry is a retired science teacher, but it seems she's busier than ever with her volunteer "career." After a long career as a biology and general science teacher at Somerville and Watchung Hills high schools, Terry shifted gears to become the director of Hunterdon County's Solid Waste and Recycling program. She was responsible for building the county's recycling transfer station, organized the county's first hazardous waste day and she initiated the county's first recycling program, retiring in 1994. Through her work with the Hunterdon County Housing Corporation, Terry pioneered the development of ECHO (Elder Cottage Housing) units built and installed on the property of county residents who need to house family members (usually elderly or disabled) in free-standing, specially-designed "cottages." Terry helped turn the railroad station in Whitehouse Station into a library and she initiated the first farmland preservation program in Hunterdon County. She is the president of several service agencies, including the Hunterdon County Housing Corporation, the ARC of Hunterdon Foundation, Hunterdon County League of Women Voters and she serves on the board of the Flemington Rotary. She was a member of the Readington Township Committee and was a former township mayor. Terry also commits a great deal of her time to the Whitehouse United Methodist Church. Terry lives in Readington Township with her husband Leonard. They have three grown children and five grandchildren. Terry enjoys gardening, canning, collecting antiques and beach vacations. |
